Trade Deadline “๐ฅ NFL 2023 Trade Deadline: Shocking Deals and Surprises! Who Struck Gold and Who Missed Out? ๐”
The 2023 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, leaving football fans with a sense of anticipation. While it may not have seen earth-shattering moves, there were significant swaps that could impact the current season.
Compared to last year’s record-breaking 10 trades on deadline day, only six deals took place this year. The Washington Commanders made the most noise by trading their top pass rushers, Chase Young and Montez Sweat. Young, the 2020 No. 2 overall pick and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, was dealt to the San Francisco 49ers, while the Chicago Bears acquired Sweat.
Fresh off a three-game losing streak, the 49ers addressed their defensive struggles with a major trade. San Francisco acquired Chase Young from the Commanders in exchange for a 2024 third-round draft pick. Young, an Ohio State standout, will reunite with former college teammate Nick Bosa. After two seasons marred by injuries, he had a breakout rookie season, tallying 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles. However, an ACL injury in the following year sidelined him for much of the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The Commanders chose not to pick up his fifth-year option this past offseason. Young now heads west with 15 tackles and 5 sacks, while veteran Fred Warner leads the Niners with just two sacks.
The Minnesota Vikings weren’t initially in the market for a quarterback. However, veteran signal-caller Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon, ending his season. With Kyler Murray set to return soon, the Vikings acquired Joshua Dobbs, who will join his seventh NFL team in seven seasons.
Dobbs had led the Arizona Cardinals to a 1-7 record since taking over as the starter at the beginning of the season, in place of the sidelined Murray. The Vikings obtained Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round draft pick.
Three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams showed his frustration during the Raiders’ 26-14 loss to the Detroit Lions by catching just one pass for 11 yards and slamming his helmet on the bench in the fourth quarter. He expressed his frustration in the locker room, but the Las Vegas Raiders didn’t entertain any trade offers for Adams.
The Tennessee Titans found themselves in a challenging situation due to a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles acquired two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard in exchange for safety Terrell Edmunds and 2024 fifth and sixth-round draft picks. This move aimed to fill the void left by safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who signed with the Lions during free agency. Byard, who has 27 interceptions since becoming a starter in 2017, holds the most interceptions among all NFL safeties through 2022.
Additionally, some other trades included the Buffalo Bills acquiring cornerback Rasul Douglas and a 2024 fifth-round draft pick from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2024 third-round draft pick. The Lions acquired wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick. The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round draft pick.
In conclusion, while the 2023 NFL trade deadline may not have been as eventful as some had hoped, there were certainly winners and losers in the trading game. Some teams strengthened their rosters, while others decided to stand pat. As we move forward in the season, the impact of these trades will become more evident.
