The Chicago Bears’ tumultuous 2023 season continues to be marred by ongoing coaching drama, with yet another coach being let go due to issues with their “workplace behavior.” Last year’s struggles seem to persist, with a string of losses from 2022 carrying over into this season, and the team’s star quarterback, Justin Fields, grappling with injuries. However, a noticeable departure from the previous year is the surprising in-season turnover of the coaching staff.
The team garnered attention a few weeks ago when defensive coordinator Alan Williams suddenly resigned from his position. Reports later revealed that the team’s HR department played a role in his departure due to allegations of “inappropriate activity” on the job.
In a statement following his resignation, Alan Williams mentioned, “I am taking a step back to take care of my health and family. I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history. The McCaskey family is first-class and second to none. I would also like to thank Coach Matt Eberflus and General Manager Ryan Poles for giving me the opportunity to come to Chicago.”
Following Williams’ departure, head coach Matt Eberflus assumed responsibility for the defensive play-calling.
However, the coaching shakeup didn’t stop with Williams. The team’s running backs coach, David Walker, is the latest casualty of the ongoing drama, having been fired due to “behavior in the workplace,” as reported by ESPN. Although there isn’t currently an assistant running backs coach, another member of the staff is expected to step in to replace the 53-year-old in the coming weeks.
It’s worth noting that while both Alan Williams and David Walker’s departures can be attributed to “bad behavior in the workplace,” a source informed ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter that the two incidents are unrelated.
The Chicago Bears continue to grapple with challenges on and off the field, making the 2023 season a trying one for fans and the organization alike.
