Upon receiving information that the suspect involved was Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chad Wheeler, standing at an imposing 6’7″ and weighing 315 pounds, Kent Police Department officers rushed to the scene. Discovering Wheeler’s girlfriend badly injured, the officers faced the daunting task of restraining a professional athlete accustomed to contending with larger and stronger opponents on the football field.
According to the police reports, one officer described the struggle, stating, “When I grabbed ahold of Chad, I could tell that he was very solid and muscular as he was not easy to move.” Even with the combined weight of approximately 700 pounds as all three officers tried to subdue him, Wheeler proved exceptionally resilient.
“As the three of us (with a combined weight of about 700 pounds) were on top of Chad, I could feel him lifting his body up like he was pushing up to get away,” one officer recounted. Wheeler’s immense size allowed him to lift his body several inches off the bathroom floor temporarily, demonstrating his formidable strength.
The police resorted to using a Taser in an attempt to detain Wheeler, but it reportedly had “little to no effect.” Despite the officers’ efforts, Wheeler remained uncooperative, making it challenging to handcuff him.
“Chad was so strong that even with the combined weight of three officers, he was able to move around and prevent us from putting his arms behind his back,” noted one officer.
Eventually, the officers successfully took Wheeler into custody, but concerns arose about fitting him into a standard police cruiser due to his size. As a result, a larger jail van was called to transport him to the station.
Wheeler, who attributed his actions to a “manic episode,” pleaded not guilty to the charges, including first-degree domestic violence assault, during a recent court hearing in Washington. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month as the legal proceedings continue.
